Manchester United edged closer to Champions League progression thanks to a 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes was integral for Manchester United yet again as he scored a brace in Tuesday’s 4-1 Champions League win over Istanbul Basaksehir, taking them a step closer to the last 16.
United had suffered a shock 2-1 defeat in Turkey prior to the international break that provided Group H rivals RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain with encouragement, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men bounced back at Old Trafford.
It took Manchester United just 7 minutes to begin the scoring, and they did so in style, Fernandes lashing a ferocious half-volley in off the crossbar from just outside the box after Basaksehir partially cleared a corner.
In 17th minute, Bruno Fernandes tapped home his second goal of the evening from close range, with the visitor’s goalkeeper stranded.
Fernandes got another to make it five goals in three games for him, and passed up the chance of a hat-trick by inviting Marcus Rashford to convert a penalty that made it 3-0 before half-time. The Portugal star really can do very little wrong at the moment.
Deniz Turuc replied a goal in the 75th minute but it looked more like a consolation.
In stoppage time, Daniel James was on hand to slot home from close range to seal a comprehensive 4-1 victory for Manchester United.
Manchester United now have nine points and sit top of Group H with two matches remaining to play, putting their Istanbul defeat to bed.
