Barcelona thrashed Alaves as Messi scored twice

Barcelona will not finish top of La Liga but Lionel Messi will almost definitely finish as the league’s leading scoring after he scored twice in a 5-0 win over Deportivo Alaves.

Barcelona wonderkid Ansu Fati opened the scoring with a well-taken finish midway through the first half

He moved to 25 goals for the season and will be taking the ‘Pichichi’ prize for top scorer in La Liga for a record 7th season.

Title winners in Spain for each of the past two years, Barcelona surrendered their crown to Real Madrid this season and there might be fallout from that setback still to come.

Messi gave Quique Setien's side a two goal advantage when he slotted their second past Alaves' No 1 Fernando Flores

The visitors had already hit the Alaves goal frame three times, through Riqui Puig, Arturo Vidal and Messi, before they took a 24th minute lead through Ansu Fati.

Lionel Messi doubled up the lead in 34th minute. Arturo Vidal had a header well saved by Roberto from Messi’s terrific cross, before Suarez made it 3-0 in the 44th minute, nodding home after great link-up play from Messi and Jordi Alba.

Luis Suarez added a third just before half-time to virtually put the game to bed for Barcelona

Nelson Semedo made it four on 57th minutes from Riqui Puig’s pass. And Messi got his second from Alba’s cross. That moved Messi to 25 goals.

Nelson Semedo was the next Barcelona player to put one past Flores, scoring their fourth goal in the 57th minute of the game

Suarez finishes the season on 16 despite having been out for five months. The front two have soldiered on and with the form of kids Fati and Puig this was a game for those at Barcelona who believe things are not all bad.

Messi provided the final nail in the coffin for Alaves by hitting a first-time shot with his left foot into the corner of the goal
